Thunder edges Baysox, 5-4

July 27, 1996|By Kent Baker

BOWIE -- Tyrone Woods hit home runs in his first two at-bats and the Trenton Thunder never trailed while handing Bowie its 20th loss in the past 25 games, 5-4, last night at Prince George's Stadium.

The first-place Thunder has won 12 of 16 since the Eastern League All-Star break to take a commanding lead in the Southern Division.

Knuckleballer Jared Fernandez (8-5) weathered a two-run first inning to pitch into the eighth when Tommy Davis homered to bring Bowie (39-66) to within one run for the third time in the game.

Tom McGraw and closer Reggie Harris preserved the victory against the roster-depleted Baysox, who lost Calvin Maduro and Keith Gordon of Olney to Rochester yesterday and were playing

without Rolando Avila (suspension).
