July 25, 1996

County police arrested a Baltimore man on drug and traffic charges after he was found sleeping in his car at a Ritchie Highway gas station Monday.

Warren L. Yates, 23, of the 3700 block of Second St. was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.

Police received a call shortly after 11 a.m. to check on a 1989 Dodge Spirit parked on the lot of a Crown gas station at Church Street and Ritchie Highway.

An officer found the driver asleep behind the wheel with the key in the ignition switch, police said. The engine was not running, but the cover to the the ignition switch was missing and duct tape was wrapped around the steering column and partially covered the switch, police said.

When the officer found the car's tags were registered to a 1985 Pontiac, he awakened the man, who said he got the tags from a Glen Burnie junkyard.

The driver showed the officer a title to the car and said he had just bought it and was taking it home.

When the officer asked for a driver's license, the man said it had been suspended, police said.

Police arrested the man and checked the car for valuables before it was towed. They found a bag of what later tested positive for marijuana and a pipe, police said.
