Main event

The first swimming finals are tonight, in the women's 100-meter freestyle and 400 individual medley and the men's 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle. U.S. hopes will ride mostly on Jenny Thompson, the former world-record holder in the 100 freestyle; breaststroker Kurt Grote, a two-time NCAA champion; and Josh Davis, the sixth-fastest American ever in the 200 free.

Best of the rest

Dream Team III makes its debut against Argentina at 10 p.m. with a host of questions to answer, all created by the phenomenal success of Dream Team I at Barcelona. For example: Will the U.S. coach call a timeout in this Olympics? (Chuck Daly never called one in 1992.)

There's a Dream Team in baseball, too, but this one hails from Cuba. In the last Olympics, the Cubans outscored their opposition by 95-16 in nine games. The United States opens against Nicaragua. Cuba starts with Australia.

Medal watch

The first medal of the Games will be awarded in shooting.

Local watch

Whitney Metzler of Glen Rock, Pa., swims for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. She competes this morning in the 400-meter individual medley.
