Ground-breaking planned for St. Francis church

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Catholic Community of St. Francis will be held at 1 p.m. July 28 at the church's new property on Cuba Road in Hunt Valley.

Cardinal William H. Keeler, archbishop of the Baltimore Roman Catholic Archdiocese, and Monsignor Thomas Donellan, pastor of the parish, will preside.

Getting zoning approval for the new church, which will seat 650, took nearly five years. The church is expected to open in about a year.

The parish currently leases space on the lower level of Executive Plaza I on McCormick Road, where Masses are offered Saturdays and Sundays.

Workshop scheduled on emotional suffering

An all-day workshop -- focusing on deliverance from loneliness, pain, fear, anger and depression -- will be held from 8: 30 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 27 at St. Stephens African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1601 Old Eastern Ave.

The event is sponsored by the Deliverance Ministry, an organization at St. Stephens. The Rev. William A. Gray will preside. Information: 686-9392.

Authors to sign books at Artscape

Local authors published by the Cathedral Foundation Press will sign copies of their recent works tomorrow during Artscape.

The Rev. Joseph Breighner, who wrote "Stops Along the Country Road," will sign his book from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Diane Scharper, author of "Radiant, Prayers/Poems," will sign from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Stephen Vicchio, author of "The I of the Beholder," will sign from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The authors will be at the literary arts tent near the Lyric Opera House on the Mount Royal corridor.

Brethren church plans ice-cream social

An old-fashioned ice-cream social will he held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Frederick Church of the Brethren, Second Street and Fairview Avenue in Frederick.

Hand-dipped ice cream will be featured as well as a craft fair, cake walks and dunking booth. The Harmony Band, a disc jockey and the Skip Wizards, a local rope-jumping team, will perform.

vTC Proceeds will benefit the church's District Camping Program. The church operates Camp Mardell on the Eastern Shore and Sheperds Spring in Sharpsburg.
