Red Sox update
The Red Sox have been hot since the All-Star break, winning six of seven, including last night's 12-11 victory over the Yankees. They gained momentum the night before the break, when Mo Vaughn's monster home run beat the Orioles for a split of a four-game series at Camden Yards. Vaughn, last season's AL MVP, ranks among American League leaders in home runs (28), RBIs (86) and batting average (.333). Jose Canseco hit his 28th homer last night, and Tim Naehring has hit a career-high 15. Boston will face three right-handers, good news for the Orioles, because the Sox are 26-42 in games started by righties. Clemens leads the league in strikeouts but has won just once in two months. Wakefield, a knuckleballer, does not resemble the Cy Young candidate of last year. The Sox had the AL's fourth-highest team ERA (5.35) through Tuesday's games.
