2nd rape is reported in less than a week

Howard County police are investigating the rape of a woman who said she was attacked in daylight by a man with a knife near Lake Elkhorn in Columbia.

The victim, a 23-year-old from Columbia, reported the Saturday attack to police Monday afternoon, police said. It was the second rape in Columbia reported to Howard police in less than a week.

According to her statement, the woman was walking on a path around the lake in Columbia's Owen Brown village between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. when a man approached her and started a conversation, police said.

While the stranger was talking, he pulled out a knife and ordered the woman into a wooded area, where she was assaulted, police said. The man ran from the area after the attack, police said.

The attacker was described as a 6-foot white male in his 20s, weighing 200 pounds. He was clean-shaven with brown hair and wore a gray shirt and blue athletic shorts, police said.

Police said the rape does not appear to be related to the reported rape of a 20-year-old in Columbia's Oakland Mill's village July 10. That victim said a stranger asked her for the time on her way to a store at 1 a.m., then forced her into woods when she passed by a second time.

The descriptions of the assailants are different, police said.
