Squeeze out ketchup art

Three lucky kids will win $5,000 scholarships and will see their winning designs grace millions of ketchup bottles in ArtSTART: Heinz Ketchup Creative Design Awards. Youngsters can submit any design on a Heinz keystone-shaped label blank, which can be obtained through schools, in Parade and USA Weekend magazines (Sept. 15), from Disney Adventures Magazine (October issue) or by writing Art-START at P.O. Box 3447, Young America, Minn. 55558-3447. It's part of the Heinz celebration of -- the 100th birthday of the condiment; it's also donating $450,000 to the National Endowment for the Arts to help save childrens' art programs.

Gather 'round, readers

Cooking Light magazine will celebrate its 10th birthday with a "reader reunion" next April 19-20, at its headquarters in Birmingham, Ala. The winner of its "Recipe of a Decade" contest will take home $20,000. Recipes must be original, low in fat, and use a product from Kraft, Inc. Rules can be found in the July-August issue of the magazine.

Local brews

Among the "artistic" offerings at Baltimore's Artscape '96 this weekend will be handcrafted beers from four Baltimore microbreweries. The four are Baltimore Brewing Co./DeGroen's, Clipper City Brewing Co., Brimstone Brewing Co. and Oxford Brewing Co. The beers will cost $3 for 16 ounces at stands throughout the Artscape grounds.

'Net some veggies

There's a home for everyone on the Internet, though it can be tedious negotiating your way. A new brochure guides vegetarians through online services to find recipes, nutrition information and other vegetarians. For a copy of "Online Services for Vegetarians," send $3 to the Vegetarian Resource Group, P.O. Box 1463, Baltimore, Md. 21203. (Or go to http: //envirolink.org/arrs/VRG/ home html.)
