Expos: Outfielder Moises Alou did not start for the fifth straight game. He has been listed as day-to-day since straining his right hamstring during batting practice Thursday.

Pirates: Pitcher Denny Neagle, a .143 hitter, was used as a pinch hitter in the fifth for Dan Miceli and doubled. Neagle is the first Pirates pitcher to get a hit as a pinch hitter since Rick Rhoden did so on May 14, 1986. . . . Pirates pitchers have given up 11 home runs in the past four games.

Rangers: First baseman Will Clark, who was on the disabled list with a badly bruised rib cage since July 4, was activated.

Red Sox: Boston has beaten every other team in the AL, preserving its record of never getting swept in a season series.

Yankees: Wade Boggs was not in the lineup because of a bruised right hand. He is day-to-day.
