An Ellicott City man was charged with driving while intoxicated after his speeding car crashed into a parked van and severely injured his passenger Sunday morning, Howard County police said.

Damon Lee Fyock, 18, of the 9300 block of Great Oak Circle, also was charged with failure to control speed to avoid a collision, police said.

His passenger, a 17-year-old from Ellicott City, suffered severe head injuries and was listed in critical condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday, police said. Police did not identify the victim yesterday.

Police said the crash took place about 1: 15 a.m. Sunday as Fyock drove his 1996 Nissan Sentra south in the 2200 block of Mount Hebron Drive. The car struck an unoccupied 1994 Chevrolet Astro Van, police said.

The victim was flown to the hospital by a state police helicopter, police said.
