Kicked off: Three athletes were kicked off the Iranian Olympic team for using steroids, a newspaper reported. The Farsi-language Jomhuri Islami said Mohammad-Reza Tolouie and Abbas Abdi were dropped from the judo team and Shaheen Nasiriniya was pulled off the weightlifting team after the trio tested positive for steroids.

Trash talk: Two million visitors are expected to generate 9,000 tons of trash during the Games.

Baseball: Travis Lee had two home runs and five RBIs to lead the U.S. national team to a 14-6 victory over the Italian Olympic team in Millington, Tenn., in a tuneup for the Atlanta Games. U.S. pitcher R. A. Dickey (5-0) allowed runners in five of the six innings he pitched but surrendered only one earned run, striking out six and walking none.
