Hits and misses

July 15, 1996|By Buster Olney

On the field: Orioles catcher Chris Hoiles was ejected in the top of the ninth inning after arguing a ball/strike call with home plate umpire Larry Barnett. At the moment Hoiles was ejected, manager Davey Johnson raced out of the dugout and after a prolonged argument, he too was booted. On Saturday, Bill Ripken was ejected.

In the dugout: With the Orioles reeling, Johnson wanted to establish an early lead yesterday. After Andy Pettitte hit Brady Anderson with a pitch leading off the first inning, Johnson had No. 2 hitter Bill Ripken bunting. Ripken sacrificed successfully, but like so many Orioles in the four-game series, Anderson was stranded.

In the clubhouse: "It's getting to the point where the wild card has to be part of our focus. Ten games is going to be really tough to catch. We're going to give it a try, but at some point, we have to turn our attention to the wild card. . . . It's very disappointing. We as a team have to look at ourselves in the mirror and try to make something happen. Being three games over .500 is nowhere near where we thought we'd be at this time. It's very frustrating." -- Orioles reliever Jesse Orosco
