Rain slows qualifying in D.C. tourney

July 14, 1996|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

WASHINGTON -- As if winning three matches in little more than 24 hours against players of equal ability isn't tough enough just to make it into the first round of a tournament, competitors in qualifying for the Legg Mason Tennis Classic starting tomorrow had the aftermath of Hurricane Bertha to contend with yesterday.

Some matches in the first round of the 56-man draw did not get under way until mid-afternoon because courts didn't dry, but they still were able to complete 31 first- and second-round matches before play was called at 10 p.m. Eleven matches will be held today starting at 10 a.m. at the FitzGerald Tennis Center at 16th and Kennedy streets NW with seven spots up for grabs in the main draw.

Form held true through most of yesterday's matches, only the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds, Doug Flach and Steve Bryan, failing to advance. Flach, who defeated Andre Agassi at Wimbledon two weeks ago, lost to Oren Mottevassel of Israel, 6-4, 6-4, and Bryan, the NCAA champion in 1991, lost to Bill Barber of Washington, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.
