A Quaker wedding

July 12, 1996|By Janet Heller

They sat side by side in silence

before a gathering of expectant faces

he deeply flushed, she lily-pale.

They sat until sensing the proper moment

rose and exchanged a few brief vows.

And as man and wife they took their seats.

We sat listening to our thoughts,

basking in the moment's warmth,

savoring the promise of their youth.

We sat while a young girl sang,

and wept as those who stood to speak

spun halos of words around their heads.

And then we sat no longer

but rose in peace to greet each other

buoyed by the sweetness of their joining.
