Severn man, teen charged with theft

July 12, 1996

County police arrested a Severn man and a 17-year-old Harmans girl Tuesday and charged them with stealing sprinkler heads, metal rods and other building material from a construction site near Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

Robert Clarence Johnson, 24, of the 8300 block of Jacobs Road West and the girl were charged with felony theft.

Officer Robert Crawford said he was patrolling BWI Commerce Park on Peppermill Drive shortly before 2 a.m. when he saw a pickup truck turn onto Dorsey Road.

Crawford followed the truck and stopped it for speeding, police said. He saw four boxes in the truck, several hundred metal rods, and an open box of 15 new sprinkler heads and two valves, police said.

Questioned by Crawford, the man said he had been hired to removed junk from construction sites. Another officer went to a construction site in the 5700 block of Executive Drive and found that the company name matched that on the boxes. The man confessed that he stole the items because of financial problems, police said.
