Robber snatches purse of 83-year-old woman

An 83-year-old Ellicott City woman was robbed of her purse Tuesday while she was getting mail from her mailbox, Howard County police said.

The victim was not injured, police said.

She was the fourth victim in a series of street robberies against elderly people in Ellicott City the past three weeks. The robberies have occurred in communities near the U.S. 40 and U.S. 29 intersection, police said.

Police said the woman was at her mailbox in the 3300 block of N. Chatham Road about 1: 26 p.m., when a man approached her from behind, snatched her purse from her hand and ran toward U.S. 40, police said.

The robber was described as a slim black male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing tan slacks and a light-colored shirt, police said.

Anyone with information should call Howard County police at 313-3200.
