Fun from Japan

Children can explore the arts of Japan today when Shizumi Dance Theater re-creates folk tales through theaters and dance at the Maryland Historical Society.

There will be comedy using masks, costumes and fans, as well as audience participation. Make sure you duck when the sword-fighting starts.

The performance is part of the Maryland Historical Society's eighth annual "Imagination Inspiration" performance series, which is aimed at educating children about Maryland's diverse ethnic heritage through storytelling, music, puppetry and dance theater.

Shizumi Dance Theater will be presented today at 9: 30 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the Maryland Historical Society, 201 W. Monument St. The 45-minute program is recommended for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Admission is $4, or $3.50 for MHS members; a group discount is available. For more information on this and future Thursday morning programs, call (410) 685-3750.

Go to the historic Cloisters estate this Saturday for a picnic, outdoor family fun and a Japanese version of the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, all part of a three-week series of Saturday events.

This Saturday's program begins with an outdoor "playshop," Maria Broom's "Taste of World Dancing" at 10: 30 a.m. At 11: 15 a.m., Broom performs in the amphitheater.

Before the evening show, families can enjoy a picnic in the secluded gardens, which open at 4 p.m., by taking a meal or buying food at the estate. Evening entertainment begins at 5: 30 p.m., when Pumpkin "StoryBook" Theatre presents "Small Crimson Parasol," a musical version of "Little Red Riding Hood" with a Japanese twist.

The Cloisters is at 10440 Falls Road. Summertime '96 Saturday Family Theatre shows will be this Saturday and July 20 and 27. The "playshops" are from 10: 30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Gates to the gardens open at 4 p.m.; "Parasol" show time is 5: 30 p.m. Evening entertainment prices are $7 in advance and $8 at the door. Morning performances are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. A "playshop" and morning show package is $9 with limited space available; advance registration only. Call (410) 323-9316.
