Benitez improves, but still has tear in elbow ligament

July 10, 1996|By Buster Olney

Dr. James Andrews found improvement in the general condition of Armando Benitez's right elbow Monday, but the Orioles reliever still has a small tear in an elbow ligament.

Benitez is going to Florida to resume rehabilitation, and if he has no pain, then he'll return to Baltimore and be on track to join the Orioles. But if Benitez begins to have persistent pain in his elbow, then he'll likely undergo reconstructive surgery, a procedure that will sideline him for a year.

Benitez began having trouble with his elbow at the end of spring training.

He was placed on the disabled list April 20, where he has remained.
