An Alexandria, Va., man was found dead in his car on the shoulder of Interstate 70 in Ellicott City on Monday after he suffered medical problems while driving, state police said.
Joseph Duke Scholler, 76, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been under a doctor's care, but police would not say what caused his death.
Another motorist had phoned 911 about 4: 14 p.m. Monday after seeing Scholler slumped over the steering wheel of his 1988 Ford Escort on the right shoulder of eastbound I-70, just west of U.S. 40, said Sgt. Thomas Coppinger, a state police investigator.
Howard County rescue workers found Scholler dead in his car. He had his foot on the brake pedal, with the car in drive and the engine still running.
