One man was fatally shot and another wounded early yesterday when assailants opened fire on the car of the victims as they drove away from an altercation in Brooklyn in South Baltimore.

Leroy Mayo Jr., 20, of the 5000 block of Denview Way in the Garden Village Apartments in Northeast Baltimore died at Harbor Hospital Center from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Clifton William, 19, of the 5200 block of Frankford Ave., also in Northeast Baltimore, was in critical condition yesterday at the hospital. He also was shot in the upper body.

Police said the victims were involved in a dispute with a group of men about 1 a.m. yesterday at an unknown location. When they drove off in a 1990 Hyundai, the assailants followed in a dark car, firing at the Hyundai as it sped north in the 3000 block of S. Hanover St. near the hospital.

Police said the victims, though wounded, drove to the hospital.
