More than two dozen Southwestern District police officers swept through several streets in the Rosemont community last night, arrested 16 men and one woman and seized heroin and crack cocaine and weapons.

Most of the arrests occurred between the 700 and 1500 blocks of Poplar Grove St., said Sgt. Fred Bealefeld, a spokesman for the district's drug enforcement unit. He said the raids began about 4 p.m. and ended about 8 p.m.

Bealefeld said officers seized $5,000 worth of heroin and crack cocaine and $500.

One man was arrested at his residence in the 1100 block of N. Dukeland St., where police seized two handguns and a 7 mm military rifle, the sergeant said.

The raids came after complaints from area residents.
