Hits and misses

July 08, 1996|By Buster Olney

On the field: Luis Polonia has made several base-running blunders in his two months with the Orioles, and in his attempt to be conservative last night, he was thrown out again. Polonia was on second and Brady Anderson was on first when Rafael Palmeiro hit a looper toward left. Reggie Jefferson, a converted left fielder, staggered and dropped the ball. Polonia, trying to avoid being doubled off second, was moving back toward second when the ball hit Jefferson's glove. Jefferson got up and threw to third to force out Polonia on a close play.

In the dugout: Manny Alexander has gone 20 days now without appearing as a position player for the Orioles. In that time, he has had two pinch-running appearances.

In the clubhouse: "We're going to go up there and meet with as many clubs as possible and see what our options are." -- Orioles assistant general manager Kevin Malone, on the possible trade talks during the All-Star break in Philadelphia.
