A robber opened an elderly driver's car door outside her Ellicott City home Tuesday, took her purse and slapped her hand when she tried to stop him, Howard County police said.

The victim, Dorothy Lowes, 86, was not injured, police said.

The incident took place about 9: 45 a.m. as Lowes entered her car in the 3000 block of North Ridge Road. A man approached the vehicle, opened the driver-side door, reached across the woman and grabbed her purse from the front seat, police said.

Lowes tried to hold on to her purse, but the robber slapped her hand and ran away, police said.

The robber was described as a tall, thin black man, 25 to 30 years old, wearing a red-striped shirt and blue jeans, police said.
