Japanese folk tale

July 04, 1996|By J. Wynn Rousuck

AXIS Theatre initiates a new summer program, Other Voices, on Tuesday with the Baltimore premiere of David Henry Hwang's one-act play, "The Sound of a Voice." Based on a Japanese folk tale and directed and designed by Gil Given, the production stars Joel Mason as a warrior and Binnie Ritchie-Holum as the presumed witch he is ordered to kill.

Other Voices was created to showcase new or recent work by women and people of color. Next summer, AXIS plans to present three new plays in rotating repertory.

Show times at AXIS, 3600 Clipper Mill Road, are 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, through July 28. Tickets are $7. There are two pay-what-you-can previews at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Call (410) 243-5237.
