Man charged in rape attempt

July 03, 1996

County police arrested a Ridgely man yesterday on charges of breaking into a Brooklyn Park home and trying to rape the woman who lives there.

Zenno Smith, 32, of the 12000 block of School St. was charged with assault with intent to rape, first-degree burglary, and assault and battery. He was arrested at 6: 30 a.m. at his parents' home.

The victim, a 48-year-old woman, told police she was awakened in the early morning hours of May 31 by a man who had his face covered.

The man put his hand over the woman's mouth, held a knife to her throat and told her not to scream, police said.

However, when he ordered her to undress, she screamed, waking her roommate, police said.

The man hit the woman and fled, police said. Officers lifted several fingerprints from the house and used the Maryland Automated Fingerprint Identification System to identify a suspect, police said.

Smith was arrested without incident, police said.
