Mitchell's wife says he threatened her with hammer

The wife of Clarence M. Mitchell III charges that the former state senator ran at a car she was riding in while swinging a hammer, court records say.

Mitchell, 56, was arrested Friday on a warrant charging him with assault by threat and possession of a deadly weapon in the incident involving his wife, Joyce T. Mitchell.

He was released Friday night on his own recognizance, saying that "these allegations are totally false" and that he was looking forward to vindication.

In an application for a temporary restraining order against her husband, Joyce Mitchell wrote that he became agitated when she and her mother came to the couple's home in the 6300 block of Wallis Ave. to retrieve Joyce Mitchell's car.

Clarence Mitchell "ran from the front entrance and made threatening gestures with a hammer at both of us," Joyce Mitchell wrote. She wrote that her husband hit the car with the hammer, but "we escaped safely."

Joyce Mitchell filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years in city Circuit Court yesterday.
