Yankees update

New York overtook the Orioles on April 30 for first place in the AL East, and has been there ever since despite a run of injuries. Starter Jimmy Key came off the disabled list yesterday, but five Yankees are still on the DL. Ace David Cone may be out for the year, and Melido Perez is on the 60-day DL. Pettitte has stepped up and is tied for the league lead with 11 wins. Gooden threw a no-hitter against Seattle in May and has been on a tear since. The Yankees have won 41 of their past 57 games at home (.719) dating to last season, and have not lost consecutive home games in that stretch. Wade Boggs is among the league leaders with a .344 average, and Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez have been hot, too. O'Neill was on a 12-for-35 tear (.343) and Martinez had 25 hits in his previous 74 at-bats (.338) before both went 0-for-4 yesterday against the Twins.
