A state police sergeant has been suspended with pay after a fistfight with another trooper at the Westminster barracks.

Sgt. Jeff Merson was treated and released Friday at Carroll County General Hospital after fellow troopers used a chemical spray to break up the fight, said a state police source who asked not to be named.

The other trooper involved was Cpl. Ed Fox, the source confirmed.

Capt. Greg Shipley, a spokesman for the Maryland State Police, said neither man was seriously injured, he said.

The fight, which occurred in a second-floor office at the barracks, was brief, Shipley said.

Both men are assigned as investigators to the Westminster Bureau of Drug and Criminal Enforcement.

Shipley said the incident is being investigated by the agency's Internal Affairs Unit and a Special Investigation Unit.

Routinely, reports from such independent investigations are sent to Superintendent David B. Mitchell with recommendations for discipline, if warranted, Shipley said.

The superintendent then would have 30 days to approve the recommendation or change it, Shipley said.

Punishment, if merited, could be as severe as dismissal or as lenient as counseling, Shipley said.

No charges have been filed, he said.

The investigations could take at least a month, Shipley said.
