Days until opening ceremonies: 23.

Taxi fares: Saying he won't tolerate price gouging, Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell yesterday vetoed legislation that would have allowed taxi drivers to increase their fares during the Olympics. The City Council had passed the legislation by a 10-7 vote June 17.

Winning look: Spotting the U.S. medal winners on the awards stand will be no contest. The uniforms will be red, white and deep blue, with a touch of gold. On the front of the polyester crepe satin jacket will be a stylized red Olympic flame, shaded in gold with half-red, half-blue stars scattered on either side. Champion Products paid the U.S. Olympic Committee a reported $40 million to provide the award suits and other outfits for the U.S. team.
