A lifeguard pulled a 9-year-old Columbia girl from near the bottom of a neighborhood pool in Ellicott City Monday and revived her using CPR, Howard County rescuers said.

Jarnel Thorne of the 10000 block of Green Mountain Circle in Columbia's Wilde Lake village was taken to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, where she was given a checkup and released Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A lifeguard at the Roger Carter Neighborhood Center pool in the 3600 block of Fels Lane saw a girl near the bottom of the pool about 2 p.m. Monday. The lifeguard dived in, pulled the girl out of the water and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Within a minute, the child began breathing, said Sgt. Robert Wiseman of the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue.

County rescuers arrived, continued treating the girl and took her to the hospital, Wiseman said.

The county's only public pool was closed last season to be enlarged to slightly more than 25 meters -- about half the size of an Olympic pool -- and to provide access for the disabled and elderly. A wading pool also was added.
