2 men injured after trucks collide in Elkridge

The driver and passenger of a pickup truck were injured when the vehicle and another pickup truck collied Thursday on Route 100 at Route 1 in Elkridge, Howard County police said.

Melvin Schafer, 41, of Baltimore, the passenger in a 1988 Ford truck driven by Stanley Schafer, 39, of Baltimore, was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He was released Friday.

Stanley Schafer was taken to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, where he was treated and released Thursday.

Police would not say whether the two men were related.

Rodney Burtwell, 22, the driver of the other vehicle, a 1983 Ford truck, and his passenger, William Thornton, 20, of Baltimore, were not injured.

Police said that Burtwell apparently failed to yield the right of way at the intersection and that charges are being filed. The accident was still under investigation.
