Charles Mattern, 77, McCormick executive

Charles F. Mattern, 77, who worked at McCormick & Co.'s downtown offices for more than 20 years, died June 16 of cancer at his retirement home in Sarasota, Fla.

Mr. Mattern came to Baltimore in 1954 as director of advertising for McCormick and settled in Towson with his wife, the former Sara Miller, whom he married in 1943. He retired in 1975.

A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and a 1942 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Mr. Mattern served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 during World War II.

After retiring, he opened a gift store in New Jersey. After retiring again, he moved to Florida.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, James Mattern of Palermo, N.J.; a daughter, Nancy Marks of Ruxton; two brothers, Frank Mattern of Singer Island, Fla., and Edward Mattern of Kingston, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial is scheduled for 11: 30 a.m. July 10 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 200 Ware Ave. in Towson.
