Olympic countdown

June 23, 1996

Days until opening ceremonies: 26.

Not set yet: Only one month remains before the first serve goes up in the Games' first beach volleyball tournament. For one-time king of the beach Sinjin Smith, that may not be enough time to get in a groove with partner Carl Henkel. "I wish we had six months more," Smith said after he and Henkel advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bud Light World Beach Invitational. "I don't feel like we are as good as we can be," Smith said. "That's taking time."

Taking out the trash: Olympic co-chairman Andrew Young has his own take on the T-shirts, pins and other merchandise that organizers hope will be coveted mementos of the games: "It's junk." That's what Young said of the trinkets and memorabilia the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games is counting on to raise a sizable chunk of its $1.7 billion budget.
