Coast Guard cutter won't dock at Havre de Grace pier

June 23, 1996

The Coast Guard cutter Red Birch, which was scheduled to be open for visitors today while docked at the Havre de Grace Maritime Festival, will not be there.

Lt. Don Jaccard, commanding officer of the Red Birch, said from the ship yesterday that the 80-foot long pier was too short for his 157-foot cutter. Jaccard was concerned the ship would come loose.

"We're just not comfortable with how we're laying," he yesterday.

The lieutenant said he would give 15-minute tours of his "buoy tender" cutter yesterday before leaving at 6 p.m. for a return voyage to Baltimore.
