Use of 'Smart House' automation growing

The "Smart House" is spreading.

In Greensboro, N.C., the 2,000-home community of Grandover is using "Smart House" systems. Each home in the Koury Corp. development will be wired to permit home automation. Minimum features will be installed in each home, such as a security NTC camera at the front door -- which transmits a picture on the family-room television -- and full-house lighting control at the touch of a button. Then buyers will be able to choose from a range of automation options.

For example, by clicking on icons on a computer screen, homeowners can control heating and air-conditioning, security systems, communicate with neighbors, schedule tee times at the community's golf course, and make dinner reservations at restaurants.

Locally, "Smart Houses" are being built by Koch Homes in the Woodberry community of Severna Park.
