Lily Pons Days

Water lilies will be in full bloom this weekend for the annual "Lily Pons Days" at Lilypons Water Gardens in Buckeystown. The garden's 275 acres of exotic water lilies, lotus blossoms and goldfish ponds provide a backdrop for the two-day celebration.

The event commemorates the 60th anniversary of the day the Metropolitan Opera star Lily Pons visited the gardens. There will be free lectures on water gardening, and roving musicians also are featured.

Hours are 10: 30 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call (800) 999-3613 or (301) 663-8687.

More than 20 bands on three stages will celebrate the coming of the summer solstice on Saturday at Wilmer's Park in Brandywine, Prince George's County. Among the performers are Jello, the Other Side, Splintered Sunlight and Black Friday.

Overnight camping, vending and other activities will accompany the music. But leave bottles, alcohol and dogs at home.

The concert is Saturday, 2 p.m. to 1: 30 a.m., rain or shine, at the park on Route 381 (Brandywine Road). Tickets are $12 at the gate; there's also a $2 parking and camping fee. For more information, call (410) 426-6727.
