Bell Atlantic shifting 100 jobs to Baltimore Engineering positions from out of state to join 1,000 others

Bell Atlantic Corp. again will boost its employment in downtown Baltimore, adding more than 100 out-of-state engineering jobs to the approximately 1,000 positions it has there now, sources said yesterday.

Top state, city and Bell Atlantic officials were expected to announce the expansion this morning. They declined to talk about it yesterday.

It's only the latest job shuffle for Bell Atlantic, which is still trying to transform itself from a sleepy utility into a nimble competitor in a fast-changing business.

The move helps downtown, which has suffered from a shrinking banking industry and vacant space.

Last year Bell Atlantic moved 600 jobs, mostly engineering positions, to its Maryland headquarters on Pratt Street even as it prepared to shed thousands of jobs companywide. It also moved 120 customer service representatives from downtown to Calverton. This year brings the biggest change yet to Bell Atlantic, as it merges with Nynex Corp.

Most of the jobs moved downtown last year were part of Bell Atlantic's Network Planning and Engineering department, which serves six states and which the company decided to consolidate in Baltimore. An internal memo indicated that the city was attractive to the company because of its abundant space at affordable rates.
