Room settings are showcases for antiques

On the Home Front

June 16, 1996

Most of us are used to shops where antiques and collectibles are crowded together, so the new FitzGerald's Antiques at 15 E. Chesapeake Ave. in Towson comes as a surprise. Here the furnishings are arranged in room settings so customers can get some idea of how they'll look in their own homes. Many of the pieces are labeled with notes on their history, materials and repairs. The owners appraise antiques and either sell on consignment or offer a buyout option.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, except Thursdays, when FitzGerald's stays open until 7 p.m.

Pink and popular

"People love to decorate," is how Donald Featherstone, inventor of the pink flamingo lawn ornament, explains its popularity, "ever since the cave man started decorating his cave."

This is the 40th anniversary of what surely must be America's, if not the universe's, most popular plastic lawn ornament. That hasn't always been true: Four years ago, the black-and-white cow had a brief moment of glory; and Featherstone, vice president of Union Products Inc., which manufactures plastic ornaments, says the company's cow actually outsold the flamingo for a brief period.

It was a passing fad, according to Featherstone, and the flamingo (with Charlie the Duck not far behind) is now back on top. Looking for your own pink flamingos? They can be found at Kmart for less than $10 a pair.

Secret gardens

This is a garden tour for those who want to learn how to make the most of small spaces and limited sun. Some 18 gardens will be open for "The Secret Gardens of Union Square and Hollins Market," which will takes place June 30 from noon until 5 p.m.

These include gardens like the Union Square House Bed and Breakfast's moon garden, done in shades of silver and white.

Tickets are $8, on sale the day of the tour at Union Square Park on West Lombard Street. The tour benefits Baltimore City Life Museum's H. L. Mencken House and other neighborhood projects. Call (410) 233-9064 for more information.
