On the field: Catcher Chris Hoiles suffered a contusion to the top of his left foot when he was hit by a pitch from Royals pitcher Mark Gubicza. Hoiles limped through the game, and afterward got treatment. He may have X-rays today, but team officials believe he can play today or tomorrow.

In the dugout: Kansas City manager Bob Boone started hot-hitting designated hitter Bob Hamelin despite Hamelin's awesome history of failure against Mike Mussina. Going into last night's game, Hamelin was 0-for-14 against Mussina. He grounded out to first in his first at-bat and hit into a fielder's choice in his second at-bat. Pitifully, he attempted a bunt in his third at-bat before popping up in his last shot at Mussina.

In the clubhouse: "A one-run complete game. Holy moly." -- Orioles manager Davey Johnson, who has been astounded by the slow pace and high scores of American League games.
