Officer to be suspended for using racial slur

June 15, 1996

A Baltimore police officer has been found guilty by an administrative trial board of uttering a racial slur and will be suspended without pay for five days, department officials said yesterday.

Officer Stephen L. Cohen, who is assigned to the Central District, used the racial slur in referring to African-Americans, according to the department's personnel order listing his suspension.

Police said the remark apparently was made Nov. 7, 1994, in a discussion with another officer and overheard. Cohen could not be reached for comment.
