June 11, 1996

The driver of a pickup truck backed over a woman who was sunbathing on a hill near her Pasadena townhouse Saturday, county police said yesterday.

Paulette Melton, 50, of the 8000 block of Wolsey Court, was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was treated and released, police said.

She had been sunbathing on a hill beside a group of townhouses about 4: 45 p.m. when a truck driven by her neighbor, Karen Ann Long, 31, also of the 8000 block of Wolsey Court, backed over her, police said.

They said Long did not see Melton on the hill.

County police officer killed in traffic accident

An off-duty Anne Arundel County police officer was killed about 3: 45 p.m. yesterday in an accident with a tractor-trailer, police said.

William T. Bertram, 40, of Glen Burnie, a decorated 14-year veteran, died of chest and head injuries at the accident scene at Ritchie Highway and Magothy Bridge Road, police said.

Bertram was pinned inside his Toyota pickup truck after it struck the tractor-trailer that was stopped at the intersection waiting to turn left, police said.

The tractor-trailer driver, David Wayne Milligan, 29, of Ridgely, suffered minor injuries and was treated at North Arundel Hospital and released.

Bertram was assigned to the Northern District.
