Days until opening ceremonies: 40.

Softball: At Hazleton, Pa., Abbey Link of the Pennsylvania State 18-and-under All-Stars had an RBI double last night to drive home the first run scored against the U.S. Olympic softball team in 35 games. But Lisa Fernandez and Shelia Connell each homered to lead an 11-hit attack as Team USA finished with a 9-1 victory in the first of two exhibition games. Michele Granger pitched a no-hitter in the second game to lead Team USA to a 1-0 win over Compton. She struck out the first 18 batters she faced and 20 of 22 overall.

Baseball: University of Southern California outfielder Jacque Jones hit two home runs and the U.S. national team hit four homers for the second consecutive day to rout Nicaragua, 11-1, at Millington, Tenn. In the rain-shortened seven-inning contest, Jones led off the second with a bases-empty homer, then teamed with San Diego State's Travis Lee for back-to-back home runs in the fourth.
