Kraus captures another Metro

Andrea Kraus built a 3-up lead with near-flawless golf for 10 holes, then struggled home for a 3-and-1 victory over Joan Winchester in their scheduled 18-hole match for the 64th annual Women's Metropolitan championship at Cattail Creek Country Club yesterday.

The title was Kraus' fourth in a row in this event, and her fifth in the past seven years, stretching her record for the span to 22-2. Overall, she has won eight Metro titles dating to 1978, a number exceeded only by Evelyn Glick, who, like Kraus, is a member of Woodholme CC. Glick won 10 overall, including five in a row (1946-50).

Kraus played the first 10 holes yesterday in 2-under par, but Winchester, after a shaky start, matched her stroke for stroke through the rest of the front nine. Down by two at that point, she lost the 10th when she could not save par from a bunker.

Winchester, a two-time titlist from Rolling Road GC, got one hole back when her opponent needed three putts from the fringe on the short 13th. Kraus, however, restored her 3-up lead when she converted a seven-foot par putt at the 15th, and closed out the match with a birdie at the 374-yard 17th.

The key hole of the match was the par-4 14th, where Kraus put her second shot into tall grass beyond and above the green. She was able to get the ball within five feet of the cup and holed the putt for par.

Championship: Andrea Kraus, Woodholme CC, d. Joan Winchester, Rolling Road GC, 3 and 1. First flight: Connie Pifer, Hunt Valley GC, d. Sally Casey, Baltimore CC, 5 and 4.
