State jobless rate falls for third month, to 4.6%

Maryland's unemployment rate continued its downward trend, falling for the third consecutive month from 4.9 percent in March to 4.6 percent in April.

Rates were lower in 21 of the state's 24 local jurisdictions; more than half reported declines of a full percentage point or better.

The rate was unchanged in Baltimore City at 7.6 percent. It stayed at 2.9 percent in Howard County and rose from 12 to 12.2 percent in Somerset County.

Montgomery County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state, at 2.4 percent, down from 2.6 percent in March. Dorchester County had the highest, at 14.6 percent, down a full percentage point from the previous month.

In the Baltimore metro area, unemployment fell from 5.3 percent in March to 5.2 in April.
