White Sox update: Chicago is making a run as the team to beat for the American League's wild-card spot, where they could pose stiff competition for the Orioles. Chicago has the third-best record (36-21) in the majors and has won 15 of its past 18. The White Sox are the only AL team with an ERA under 4.00, at 3.95. Closer Roberto Hernandez has a club-record 17 consecutive saves and the bullpen has allowed just 22 of 83 inherited runners to score (26.5 percent). Frank Thomas is having a typical season, with a .335 average, 17 homers and an AL-high 62 RBIs. Ex-Oriole Harold Baines is crushing the ball, too (.306, 11 homers, 46 RBIs).
