Children will help conduct the worship service at St. John Baptist Church on Sunday as the west Columbia congregation holds a Children's Day service recognizing young people in its Sunday school classes, those graduating from high school and others.

"The children will be in the pulpit -- they'll be doing everything except the sermon and the altar prayer," said Marilyn Davis, youth coordinator for the church, which worships in Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in west Columbia.

The third annual service, which takes place at 11: 45 a.m., is intended to "let our children know that they are special to us and important to us," Davis said.

About 100 children attend the church, she said. Among the church's children-oriented programs are: AWANA, or Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, a Bible study program; and Jesus and Me, or JAM, a community outreach program.

Sunday's speaker will be the Rev. Bridget Goines of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

Information on the children's day service is available by calling the church at (410) 992-6977.
