Winchester advances on 19th hole of Metro


Joan Winchester, from Rolling Road Golf Club, had the toughest struggle among the favorites, as form held up during the quarterfinals of the annual Women's Metropolitan golf championship at Hunt Valley Golf Club yesterday.

Winchester, a two-time champion, saw a 3-up advantage disappear in the closing three holes against Ronda Henderson, of Diamond Ridge Golf Club, then parred the first extra hole for the win.

Andrea Kraus, of Woodholme Country Club, winner of the last three titles and seven overall, held off Leigh Farrell, from the Country Club of Maryland, 3 and 2, and will play Kristin Dollenberg, Baltimore Country Club, a winner over Joan Lins, Cattail Creek Country Club, 5 and 3, in one of this morning's semifinals at Maryland Golf & Country Club.

The other semifinal will pair medalist Jenny Chuasiriporn, of Hunt Valley Golf Club, a 3-and-2 victor over Sandy Pelisek, of Cattail Creek Country Club, and Winchester.

Championship: Andrea Kraus d. Leigh Farrell, 3 and 2; Kristin Dollenberg d. Joan Lins, 5 and 3; Jenny Chuasiriporn d. Sandy Pelisek, 3 and 2; Joan Winchester d. Ronda Henderson, 19 holes.

Consolation: Sally Casey d. Terry Costello, 1 up; Shirley Keeney d. Nancy Trail, 5 and 4; Young Ja Kim d. Tinker Sanger, 5 and 3; Connie Pifer d. Midge Thursby, 6 and 5.
