Stephen P. Clark,72, the mayor of Miami who led city and Dade County governments for much of three tumultuous decades, died Tuesday after a yearlong battle with stomach cancer. Mr. Clark saw Miami rise from an Old South port to the gateway of Latin America. He steered the city and county governments during an era of rapid growth, ethnic tensions that sometimes erupted into rioting, drug wars and one immigration crisis after another -- most recently in the summer of 1994 when 30,000 Cubans migrated.

Dominic Quinn,73, a radio talk-show host in Philadelphia who cherished opera, the printed word and the proper use of the English language, died Friday of a heart attack at his home in Wayne, Pa. Previously associated with broadcasters in Chicago, he joined WWDB-FM in 1977 as the host of its drive-time program on weekday mornings.

Ishmael Bernal,58, a leading Filipino movie director who struggled against censorship in films portraying social injustice, died Sunday of a heart attack in Manila, Philippines.
