Hits and misses

June 03, 1996|By Buster Olney

On the field: Scott Erickson allowed one run in eight innings yesterday, running his record in Anaheim Stadium to 5-0. He has beaten the California Angels 10 straight games. "No reason," Erickson said. "Pure luck. Some teams you have success against, some teams give you trouble."

In the dugout: With the Orioles leading by 14 runs after six innings, manager Davey Johnson inserted Manny Alexander for Cal Ripken at shortstop and Mark Smith for Rafael Palmeiro (Smith played right field; Bobby Bonilla moved to first base). Alexander and Smith each struck out in one at-bat. Closer Randy Myers, who went 10 days without pitching before blowing a save on Wednesday night against Seattle, worked the ninth.

In the clubhouse: Johnson has asked Myers to wear slacks on the road, to conform with the dress code. Instead of his usual pair of jeans, then, Myers donned a pair of fire-engine red slacks after yesterday's game that only reached the top of his ankles, drawing laughs from all corners of the Orioles' clubhouse.
