Columbia Majestic keeps title with 2-1 victory over Bethesda Crumpton, Williams score in under-16 championship

Trailing by a goal, Columbia's Maryland Majestic players did some soul-searching at halftime. It was obvious they needed to improve on a lackluster first-half performance or the Maryland Cup would be belong to the Bethesda Force.

A more intense Majestic side emerged after intermission. Abby Crumpton and Jane Williams then tallied in a two-minute span midway through the second half and defending titlist Majestic dTC had a 2-1 victory over the Force for the girls under-16 crown yesterday in the Snickers Maryland Cup championships at Carroll County Community College.

Six matches will decide titles today. All Cup winners advance to the Region I tournament June 29-Aug. 2 in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Regional champion boys and girls teams in U-16 to U-19 age groups advance to the national championships Aug. 1-4 in Indianapolis.

The Force beat the Majestic for the U-14 crown in 1994, but did not compete in the U-15 age group which the Majestic won last year.

In the 57th minute, Courtney Walker sent a cross to Crumpton, about 12 yards from the goal. Crumpton placed a high shot into the right-center of the net.

Two minutes later, Jaime Wolff looped a ball high into the air with her right knee. The ball bounced once in the penalty area before Williams converted a left-footed half-volley.

The Majestic did not escape without a scare. With about six minutes remaining, Bethesda's Abigail Swagart placed a soft free kick from outside the perimeter of the penalty area untouched through a maze of players on one hop off the far post. It rebounded into the hands of goalkeeper Meghan Myers.

It wasn't a great day overall for Baltimore-area teams, which captured only two of the other seven finals. One Columbia girl, however, had a memorable Saturday. Leilani Ho, a Wilde Lake High freshman, scored three times to power the Bethesda Broncos to their fourth straight Cup with a 3-1 triumph over the Parkville Panthers in the U-15 final.
