The field for the sixth annual Chesapeake Cup tightened considerably during yesterday's second round, as six teams, headed by Ed Gibstein-Tim Jackson, finished within two shots of each other.

Aggregate scores will count for a 72-hole total in today's closing round at Caves Valley Golf Club.

Gibstein, from Locust Valley, N.Y., and holder of the competitive course record at 66, paired with Jackson for the first time, and they combined for five birdies in a 5-under-par 66, and a 36-hole total of 9-under-par 133.

With the championship flight starting on No. 10, Gibstein and Jackson, the 1994 U.S. Mid-Amateur titlist from Germantown, Tenn., meshed their games around the turn, as Gibstein birdied the 17th and first holes, and Jackson, the second and third. Gibstein got his team the outright lead with a birdie at the ninth.

The day's best round was a 65 by North Dakota residents Mike Podolak, the 1984 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, and Russ Newman. Podolak did most of that damage by going 2-4-2 against pars of 4-5-3 on Nos. 6-7-8.

He holed a 185-yard five-iron shot at the sixth; nearly wedged in for another eagle at the seventh, before tapping in for birdie, and made a 10-foot birdie putt on the eighth.

They were joined at 134 by defending champions Jerry Courville Jr.-Joe Sommers (68) and Brooks Kerrick-Ray Sovik (68).

First-day leaders Craig Carson-Bob Young started at 7-under par, and were 10-under after their first five holes before slipping back to finish at par-71 and 135. Vinny Giles and Buddy Marucci, a finalist in last year's U.S. Amateur, had 68 for 135.

In the companion Senior division, Tom Graham-Mark Mulvoy used the flight's best round, a 68, to total 137, for a three-stroke lead on Tom Blank-Jim Graham.
